LONDON — As tributes poured in for Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant, who died alongside his teenage daughter in a helicopter crash on Sunday, Britain’s BBC News aired footage of another basketball player: LeBron James.
While the “News at Ten” report opened with a photo of Bryant and his daughter Gianna, who were both killed in the crash roughly 30 miles northwest of Los Angeles, it then panned to footage of James, wearing a jersey with “James” written on the back.
The segment sparked fierce backlash on social media and was shared on Twitter by BuzzFeed News editor Matthew Champion. As of Monday morning local time, the clip had been viewed almost 3 million times.
